Stab Binding

This class will equip students with the process of making the stab binding which is the basis for many other bindings. We will go over the traditional method and familiarize ourselves with how different materials will offer unique problems and solutions to the format. Everyone will complete their own binding and be able to experiment on their own.
Single Needle Coptic

Kevin will lead participants through his own style of single needle coptic binding. The traditional method of single needle coptic involves kettle stitches at the head and tail, but in this structure chain stitches will be exclusively utilized. As with any coptic structure, it’s one of the earliest styles of bookbinding, and produces a hardcover book that lays perfectly flat. One of the nicest features of this binding is the beautiful exposed spine.

Cassette Tape Coptic

Due to the positive reception of a small one-off book, we’re providing this workshop to share the joy. This is a subtle variation on traditional coptic structures and done in such a dimension that it matches most audio cassette tapes. (You could go wild and turn a cassette tape rack into a library!)

For the first session, participants learn the basics of letterpress printing by setting up ruled pieces of lead to print and then in the following session, those then dried pages will be bound in a coptic binding.
Sewn Boards Binding- Late Summer

This book structure opens flat, making it a good choice for journals and sketchbooks.
Sewn boards is an excellent structure for new binders. You will work with common bookbinding tools, materials, techniques, and principles such as grain direction, tidy application of adhesive, and measuring one component of the book to fit another.

Reduction Printing

In this workshop participants will take images and define the shadows, middle tone and highlights to print a single plate three times and make a small edition of an image with basic tonal shifts. We’ll go over the process of transferring images to linoleum plates and then carve. First to remove the highlights, print, then carve out the middle tones, print, and then remove those middle tones and print in black.
